Checking a name properly

How do I check if a business name is taken?

Three layers matter. First, the domain: type the name above and we query the registries directly, so a 'looks free' really means unregistered. Second, social handles: the links we show open each platform at your handle, and a page-not-found usually means it's available. Third, trademarks: a name can be free everywhere and still be someone's registered mark, so search the USPTO database (or WIPO outside the US) before you print business cards.

Is this checker really free?

Yes. Domain availability comes from RDAP, the public protocol the registries themselves run, which costs us nothing to query. No account, no email, no catch. If you find a free name, the register links go to a registrar; some of those links may earn us a commission at no cost to you.

The .com is taken. Should I give up on the name?

Not necessarily. Plenty of real businesses launch on .io, .app, or .co, or adapt the name slightly (get-, use-, try-, or hq suffixes). What matters more is whether the name is memorable, spellable out loud, and clear of trademarks in your industry.

What makes a good business name?

Say it out loud to someone and ask them to spell it. If they can't, keep looking. Short beats clever, and a name that hints at the outcome you deliver beats an abstract word. Check that it doesn't mean something unfortunate in a language your customers speak.
